“Think of the audience naked.”

That’s the advice I got when I would freeze on stage.

NOT HELPFUL!

Performance anxiety doesn’t go away by imagining people in mortifying situations.

It doesn’t even go away when you imagine them being on your side.

My performances and auditions were suffering – big time.

None of the advice people gave me was working and my optimism was fading.

I used to ask myself if the years and thousands of dollars I’d invested into being a performer was for naught.

After one (or many) mortifying performances, I was ready to give up until…

I don’t know what it was (maybe the humiliation lol), but all of a sudden, I decided that I was over being a victim of my anxiety. I was going to figure out how to be done with this shit for good.

Thank God because, after 5+ years of self-study and experimentation, I learned that overcoming performance anxiety is pretty simple. And it doesn’t require imagining the audience naked.

It doesn’t require imagining anything about them at all.

Because performance anxiety has nothing to do with other people. It’s between you, your nervous system, and your mind.

Yeah, your body developed a mechanism to keep you safe and comfy and it kind of went on overdrive.

Think of it like an allergic reaction:

What is supposed to cause your body to have a mild immune response to keep you safe turns into a raging war inside of you, resulting in sickness and misery.

Performance anxiety is kinda like that except with your psychological and nervous systems. Most folks’ systems respond with mild jitters maybe. But ours respond with earthquakes of electrical responses that trick our brains and bodies into believing we are actually experiencing real danger.

Very dramatic.

Also, very overcome-able.

You can actually enjoy performing in front of people.
